What inspired you to create a NASAA accredited range of skincare products.

My venture into making skin care products was triggered by a concern for the health risks associated with the ingredients included in virtually all skin care products - particularly the preservatives, which are standard inclusions in all water-containing skin care. I also discovered that other ingredients are problematic, either because of their negative effects on the skin, like emulsifiers, or because they are disastrous for the environment, like palm oil. After eliminating preservatives, emulsifiers and palm oil from our products, going through the process of organic certification with NASAA was really the next logical step.

What were the main challenges you faced in order to get it launched; and are you still facing these challenges today?

Launching our range was the easy part - we started the business 15 years ago, with the same ethics we have today. The challenge really lies in educating the consumer about the impact of their buying choices. It is very easy to get caught up in the busyness of life, and not think carefully about the impact of what we choose to buy, either on our health or on the environment. We created Mokosh to offer the most ethical and healthy choice when it comes to skin care. Many people don’t look more deeply than price or convenience - this is the struggle we faced when we started, and still face today.

What helped you to see it through to the end?

The reason we have persevered is a belief that using our synthetic-free, 100% certified organic skin care results in healthier skin than the alternative. We also feel that our brand is an example of how moving away from the accepted, or standard way of doing things can often mean a step up in quality. Making changes that will help save the planet does not always mean a sacrifice in quality.

What are your plans for the next 5 years?

We plan to continue spreading the word about the benefits of skin care made without synthetic ingredients. In the process, we hope to empower people to think more carefully about their buying choices, and help them understand that they can make a difference, just by being more conscious.
