Rooibos
Often called “African Red Bush,” the rooibos plant was discovered in South Africa in 1772. The indigenous peoples collected and brewed its fine, needle-like leaves. This practice was co-opted by Dutch settlers, who needed a replacement for expensive British teas. Difficulty with cultivation hampered the adoption of this herbal tea until the mid-20th century.
